Author Visits and Writing Workshops

 

Storytime

Tieska Jumbo, author of David's Dinner Party and Danny's Christmas List, is a former high school English teacher and mother to two young boys. She loves being with children and sharing the love of books and stories. During Storytime, children enjoy the following experience:

  • David's Dinner Party 
  • Group discussion
  • Hands-on activity

There are many themes in David's Dinner Party, however, three themes foster a rich discussion and activity session:

  • Concept of self-acceptance
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Gardening and nutrition

Each session runs between 30 and 45 minutes and is tailored to meet the needs of different audiences. The group discussion and hands-on activity will be centered around one theme.

Writing Workshops

Tieska Jumbo is an author and Web Content Manager, managing a team of technical writers for a Fortune 500 financial software company. Formerly a high school English teacher, Tieska holds a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Spanish minor and a Master of Science in Library Science. In the following writing workshops, Tieska shares her experience and expertise as a writer and teacher to help students find their voices and tell their own stories. Additionally, she looks forward to sharing the world of technical writing as a potential STEM career path.

Workshop: You've got a story!

Everybody has a story to tell, whether it's an account of what happened the day before or a fictional story from the depths of the imagination. In this workshop, students will learn to:

  • Brainstorm ideas
  • Outline a story
  • Finish a draft

This workshop is tailored to meet the needs of various audiences from students in kindergarten and into adulthood. Younger students who are beginning writers may opt to tell their story through pictures, but the process remains the same. 

Workshop: Introduction to Technical Writing

Technical writing simplifies complex information. In this workshop students are introduced to technical writing as a concept and as a career choice. Students will see how technical writing shows up in daily life and the different forms it takes in the workplace. By the end of the workshop, students will be able to:

  • Define technical writing
  • Identify technical writing in daily life
  • Create a piece of technical writing

This workshop is tailored to meet the needs of various audiences from students in kindergarten and into adulthood. Younger students who are beginning writers may opt to create their technical writing through pictures, but the process remains the same.
